Designing for the iPad

The Incase design team is hard at work designing products for the iPad, but we’d like to hear from you.

  1. How has the iPad enhanced your life?
  2. How do you find yourself using the iPad most?
  3. What kind of products would you like to see for the iPad?
  4. Are Incase products meeting your needs? If not, how could they be better?

Feel free to leave a comment on this blog post or on our Facebook Page.

i would like to see a incase slider for ipad, maybe some eccentric designs also, something really wacky! Really would love that and defiantly buy one for mine!

    1. Its made carrying around a “computer” much easier and lighter. I can organize my life, and use the iPad for almost everything I used to do on my Macbook Pro (except design work, obviously).

    2. I read, watch movies/tv shows, browse the internet and check emails.

    3. I’d like to see a sleeve with no zipper, some sort of shell like your iPhone slider cases, or a bag of some sort with a shoulder strap.

    4. No, I hate the colours that are being offered in the iPad products and would like to see more selection, similar to the iPhone products.

  3. I’d love to see a simple case with a kickstand built in… None of the other stands really work out for me, and I think this would be an ideal built in solution.

1- I incrase my multimedia live and interactivity with my kids tech time (games, surfing inthe net, movies, pictures)

2- after works, wekeends, livingrooms, bathrooms, in the bed. Travels, etc.

3- side bags ! Minimalist, safe and cool!
4- I have the best backpack ! Slim icase
    4-

    1. I’ve slowly moved from taking my laptop to bed at night to browse and surf before I go to sleep, to taking the iPhone with me… now it’s the iPad and it’s contributed to a lot more reading and consumption of media.

    2. I use it most to get email, update twitter, check stocks, read news

    3. I’d love a hard shell back case with a simple pull out kickstand that puts the iPad at the correct typing level. I currently use a product from another company that is close but the viewing angle is hard to deal with because of the glare from ceiling lights on the reflective screen.

    4. I love your backpacks but I felt the iPad case was too heavy/bulky for my use. The sleeves are nice but I don’t like the where the zipper is located. I’d rather have it at the side. Just personal prefs.

So, I heard a little rumor that Apple stores aren’t carrying third party cases anymore… because they look too much like iPhone / iPod cases. The big thing to take away here is that the iPad is NOT an iPhone or iPod. The leather folio case is the only third party case I’ve seen in stores lately, so maybe approach the design from the perspective of the Apple designed case.

My general uses for the iPad are the initial intended purposes: media consumption. Whether it be reading things online, iBooks, or watching videos from Netflix, it’s a great device.

What does the iPad replace in your life? For me, it means I don’t have to lug around a 15″ MBP back and forth to work or the studio anymore. I think a really SLIM backpack, with a minimal amount of pockets (for things like the charger, camera connector, etc) and maybe a few additional supplies would be really useful.

Personally, I have an incase slider on my iPhone 3GS, and I carry around one of the coated canvas bags. As a designer myself, additional items in my bag are usually a notebook for sketching, a notebook for writing, a few pencils and pens, and MAYBE a camera (currently using a large DSLR, but once the iPhone 4 is released, I’ll be able to slim down even more).

In regards to my opinion of incase products, I think they’re the best out there for Apple, but that doesn’t meant they can’t be improved upon. The backpacks are great for protecting your Mac, but they are generally too bulky and rather ugly. I surf your site all the time and see some really nice looking cases and bags, but… if only they would come in colors OTHER than the ridiculously dated neons, and while your patterns look bright, vibrant and exciting, they’re almost too trendy. Follow Apple’s design aesthetic. Simplify. Create a core set of products that are exciting and great for EVERYONE. Incase is the biggest seller of Apple cases and bags in the world, align yourself with the design ethos Apple has put forth and follow it to a T. People will eat that stuff up. I know the most exciting case I’ve bought (my favorite one that is) was the plastic white slider for iPhone 3GS. It’s just a case. It’s the same color as the phone. Unobtrusive. Easily ignorable. Amazing.

    Hello Incase,

    My names Matthew,

Although you know nothing about me, I know a little about you guys, but the biggest thing I have learned is you guys fifer the best cases for iDevices, and all of my cases are from you guys including the one on my iPad rite now.

    What I have to say,

    1. Silicon cases should be a lot firmer if used with this large device, and It would be cool to develop a silicon case that isn’t a hair magnet as I cannot seem to find one on the market,

    2. HARDSHELL similar to the slider cases it would be cool to have a hardshell case with a snap on sort of feature and would be the first one I have seen,

    3. I would love to see you guys build a 2 part case made of both silicon and plastic, that combine together for great protection, this could be a bulky case but insure ULTIMATE protection for our beloved ipads.

    4. (maybe) maybe since a lot of people are star bucks lovers who drink coffee and blog when using this iPad, make a water/coffee resistant case that will be resistant to the elements.

Please incase let me know what you think if my ideas, and I hope to see some of these features in the next case I buy, drop me an email at [email protected] or Twitter.com/tap2hck

Cant wait to be buying these new cases me and others are suggesting and reviewing them on my YouTube.com/tap2hck channel!

  8. 1. it changed the way I browse the web. Being able to carry it wherever i go and not worry about battery life is the key.
    2. on the couch just browsing, play some games.
    3. a more flexible dock that works with cases please, please please… I have some ideas, but no idea how to make it happen :(
    4. I really like the convertible book jacket style, but I really don’t like leather.

    1. I use my iPhone a LOT less; along with my laptop – in fact, I SOLD my laptop as this replaced it (although I still own my iMac).
    2. Writing papers; watching movies; Internet; Twitter; Facebook; viewing photos; reading books; emailing; on the couch and on the go.
    3. I would like a bag (similar to the macbookpro bags like the nylon sleeve (mustard please!). I would like to have something with a strap
    4. I purchased the travel kit from you guys and love it, but hate carrying it like a fat book but would love to put it in a bag! It looks like a Bible cover… yuck. I currently use the Apple case and love it – but also use the Travel kit daily. (apple case fits snug in the bag).

    1. Enabling me to show off my Photography & Graphic Design Portfolio. & great for portable entertainment.
    2. Portfolio stuff. twitter
    3. I would LOVE to see a DSLR+iPad case. Be able to carry my 5dmkII with a 24-70mm on it plus my iPad and a few extra pockets. In a sling so i could quickly get out either device quickly. That would be ULTIMATE!
    4. I love INCASE. My favorite cases. i would say that they are meeting my needs. But i feel they could be even better in many ways. I own a grip of incase bags/cases. But there are a bunch of things that i wish were different about them.

  11. One request only, a slimmer convertible book jacket please?

    Keep up the great work,

    Bernard

    1. Use it to show off my portfolio, entertainment.
    2. twitter, movies on the go, portfolio
    3. A DSLR iPad combo bag. Sling style so i can get to my DSLR without having to remove the bag.
    4. Love the DSLR bags. I like my iPad zipper sleeve. Wish it had a pocket though. have the duffle bag too. i wish it was a little stiffer.

I’ll echo others that the Convertible Book Case is a great idea, but it feels excessively bulky in light of the iPad’s extreme minimalism. It’s probably 2x-3x thicker than the iPad, which seems just bizarre.

I think Tom Bihm has a great design in the Ristretto: it’s smaller than a traditional backpack, but just large enough to fit the iPad and some extras. “iPad Lifestyle,” if that’s not too cheesy.

I’d love to see a bag like the Ristretto from Incase, but with a specialized protective pocket to carry the Apple Wireless Keyboard, and a minimal stand like the one that comes with your Travel Kit Plus. Except, instead of the two-option rigid stand you have now, something more flexible and perhaps even more compact like the Seskimo StickUp:

    http://www.seskimo.com/stickup.php

It’s great that you are soliciting feedback like this. The iPad is suited for so many different uses and situations. I’m sure designing for it at this early stage must be tough.

  15. I’d like to see an iPad case that offered protection from water, but still allowed the touchscreen to function properly. (and charging at the same time if possible)

Really the main issue is keeping salt spray away from all openings…

Live on the Gulf of Mexico and would love to use the iPad as my GPS with a vector chart app w/o worrying about salt spray (maybe even a splash) killing it.

    Thanks

1.The iPad has enhanced my life by bringing the Internet to my finger tips without the need of a bulky computer and a bag full of accessories.

2.I use my ipad for leisure Internet usage and news updates on the things i care about; fashion, sports, and technology.

3.I’d like to see nice eye pleasing form fitted cases both hard shell and soft. Bags for the iPad that are as portable as that iPad itself, like a mini backpack or shoulder sling for the iPad and power charger. And one for say an iPad camera kit and a dslr camera.

4.Most of the cases you guys have made are produced in girlie colors that I wouldn’t touch. And the few cases I have seen from you guys are really bulky and add way too much size to my iPad correcting this problem by checking out my response to #3.

    And now for your questions.
1 & 2 together. I use Pages to takes notes/minutes at all the meetings I which I used to use my laptop. No more sore shoulder.

    1. And I’ll add that now i can watch the TV news and actually see the stuff in my Twitter account. I had to take my glasses off to read my iPhone.

3 & 4 are the keyboard dock fitting into the case that I’m still waiting for.

  19. I’m a Slider case junkie: minimalist, non-maring, protective, and sacrificial. If I were to dream, I’d ask for something to waterproof one without bulletproofing it at the same time.

Everyone I have that has an iPad has ordered the Dodocase. I think you really need to make something a little more high-classthan your standard cases.

Although I’m not answering your questions, I wanted to chime in and say that a DSLR sling with iPad spot would be the _ultimate_ bag. I’d sell all of my other DSLR bags I’ve collected instantly. Not kidding.

Well at this point in the ipad case game I would say incase needs a true winner. Let me just get to the point: incase slider style case, preferably soft touch coating. Implemented in some way a low profile kickstand to at least 2 viewing angles. Also another plus of having a case like this is you guys can make some dope as special edition, Parra would be so cool again. Anyway, just my thoughts….

I also agree with the above poster that you guys should have better colors. More black, white, and grey cases. Many of us don’t want these neon colors. Also more minimalist style. On a side note not relating to the ipad, You guys should make a slider style case for the iphone 4 that just went around the border similar to the apple iphone 4 case. Soft touch awesomeness should also be used here.

  24. 3.) I would really like to see a version of the perforated snap case for the iPad I would also like it to be compatible with the Apple dock, meaning that the dock area and the back of the case is left open so that it can fit in the dock without taking the case off of the iPad.

4.) as alluded to above, I really wish your products were more compatible with docks etc. I understand the difficulty with the limited space of the iPhone, but with the iPad I think some more creative things can be done to protect the device without sacrificing compatibility.

  25. 1. My iPad has changed the way I do work and have fun… ( the apps you guys recommend are awesome.)
    2. I use the iPad for everything now. It allows me to be create whilst staying entertained. it’s a whole different experience unlike anything before.
    3. For the iPad I’d love to see a more minimalistic case with a lay on the table design. Possible something like your perforated snap case but that wraps around the front just a tad more to protect the bigger screen better. Also, I really think your convertible book jacket is great but it need to be slimmed down. I also think you should do some Curated by Arkitip cases for it. Lastly, I think you should include the stand that comes with the Travel Kit with all cases not the flimsy one as my iPad has fell many a times in it.
    4. inCase has the highest quality cases and I look forward to what you can do with our input. ( I’m also excited for the iPhone 4 cases. Can’t wait to see them!)

  26. 1. A perfect middle ground between my iPhone and MBP. It has a much higher level of usability for certain tasks on the go.
    2. On my lap.
    3. Someone else had already mentioned a DSLR+iPad sling bag, and that is very much what I’m looking for. I’ve been using a MOLLE waist pack (http://twitpic.com/1×380j) worn as a sling bag that barely fits the iPad width-wise, but allows me to throw in my GF1, work supplies, notepad, iPod, etc. as well. The biggest issue is that because it’s a military-style bag it has no internal organization whatsoever and everything kind of flops about against the iPad. I have also seen this (http://bit.ly/bX16Xm) bag, which I lust over, but it’s at a Porter collaboration price point. I’m sure you guys can come up with some sort of middle ground, and I look forward to what that is!
    4. They’re by far the best made and best designed case accessories for Apple products. They are always my first choice.

    -Brandon

  27. Convertible jacket that fits better and a iPad Slider. Please?

What a about a nice bag for ipad / MBP with solar panel for charging? There are no bags that actually look good with solar panels…

I kinda wanna skip all the questions except #4.

I think the Book Jacket for the iPad could be improved by utilizing a flap a la the Apple iPad Case. I find my iPad sliding out of the case all the time when I have it propped up the way the Book Jacket was designed. Please improve this and I’ll be one happy camper!

    Thanks,
    Mike

*Convertible Book Jacket (for the above post)

  31. slider for sure. my ipad has retired my macbook and is now my main source for apple-tv remotes and my wired house remotes. deff. need a slider case in some crazy colors/chrome/gold?
    love your stuff.

  32. I would love to see more options in the Protective Cover for the iPad. More color options (orange, turquoise, yellow, etc.). It would be great if it could be somewhat translucent so you can see the apple logo on the back! Nothing bulky, it should be able to fit in the neoprene sleeves with the snap on case still on. I think you guys make the BEST products on the market for Apple products. Keep it up.

  33. 1. Less than I thought. I still love the iPad, but without a decent case, I’m reluctant to carry it as much as I’d like to. I’ve got the Incase Protective Cover, and I’m very disappointed in it. It’s too floppy and pulls away from the iPad too easily, everything sticks to it, and it adds too much weight.

    2. For iElectribe. A news reader.

    3. An iPad Slider case. Please.

    4. The Slider case made me a believer in Incase products. I’ve had it on my iPhone 3G since I got it and I’ve never worried about my iPhone getting damaged. (A key feature is that the case is not tacky, or rubbery, and you don’t have to worry about it hanging up while removing it from a pocket, and fumbling and dropping it.) Having that piece of mind made my iPhone experience much better. The simple elegance of design, utility, and durability make the Slider case the perfect iPhone case. I want that for my iPad.

  34. I also am a huge believer in incase products. I have bought multiple cases for every iPod I have had and iPhones I have had. My first incase case was the original folio for the iPod photo.

I did not buy an incase case for my iPad because I was disappointed with the offerings from incase. I actually went with the Apple case for the iPad.

What I would buy though is a Slider case for the iPad. This is what I would really like to see and what I really want to buy.

The only complaint I have with the slider for the iPhone 3G/3GS is it will scratch the back when taking the case off if there is any debris that has been caught underneath the phone. I hope this is fixed in the next iteration for iPhone 4 and possibly even the iPad.

  35. I think the Incase for the Ipad is a great idea but with one flaw, after a week or so use my Ipad now quickly slides out by half an inch when on the stand obscuring part of the screen and covering some of the edge controls/ports. Understand Incase have now come up with a fix for this but what about the thousands who bought the original? Is there a retrofit to cure the problem or do we just dump our €60 case and buy another (unlikely)!

  36. I would love to see a snap case for the iPad like the one you have for the iPhone 4.

  37. 3. I’d like to see a “stay on” design not too dissimilar from the protective cover that integrates (easy insert/removal) with a book cover type case (maybe room for a good old fashioned note pad on the flap).

I have the book jacket (and I love it), but I wish it was easier to remove for the times I want to use it by itself.

    4. I love my iPhone 4 slider case – which led me to your iPad cases!

  38. Hi Incase I am a product designer from the UK. I believe I have developed a case for the market which is next generation… how we work now and in the future. Don’t laugh, I would like to speak to someone regarding its development/production, I know its a bold statement. Please contact me.
