The Fun Fun Fun Fest Scavenger Hunt

Head’s up! On November 5-7th, we’re again sponsoring Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas. Last weekend, in the lead up to the fest, our friends at Transmission Entertainment threw a city-wide scavenger hunt. According to all participants it was a huge success. Here’s Transmission’s Brendan Hannah with the recap:

“Over the course of the last five years, Fun Fun Fun Fest has established itself as a veritable gathering of all things music, comedy, food, and arts come winter time in Austin, Texas. We truly pride ourselves on nurturing maximum fan interaction. So, in addition to the fest we also curate an annual Scavenger Hunt each year to offer fans a chance to obtain complimentary tickets, upgrades to VIP status, and win a whole slew of amazing prizes.

This year, Incase was a proud sponsor of the festival, and accordingly, Festival fans had a chance to score heaps of Incase swag at the 2010 edition of the Scavenger Hunt on October 15th. Keep in mind this isn’t your usual hunt – last year’s fans went as far as kissing senior citizens and indulging in hanky panky with the esteemed Stevie Ray Vaughan statue in town to obtain their rewards.

And this year was no different as nearly 200 participants knocked off the various activities on the ‘to-do-list’ with fervor and passion. One team scored big with their Fun Fest inspired tattoos, others arm-wrestled an immense bartender at the check-in point at The Mohawk, still others gathered miscellaneous items like a Corey Haim movie on VHS, and of course, quite a few took self-incriminating photographs of assorted variety to garner those elusive points. All in all, it was quite an amazing adventure for everyone involved, and of course the lure of Incase backpacks, among other things, was a truly motivational tool we were happy to provide.”

We look forward to seeing you at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Waterloo Park next week!

Calligraffiti Throw-Ups Opening Reception

 title=

Last night’s opening reception at Project Space celebrated the new exhibition “Calligraffiti Throw-Ups” with works by Niels “Shoe” Meulman.

 title=

Shoe’s mastery of calligraphy and graffitti is apparent in his work. The oversized calligraphy on linen canvas overlaid with spray paint, presents you with a burred visual effect. And to accent these pieces, Shoe went so far as to fill up Christmas ornaments with paint and threw them against the walls to create paint blotches and drips. Simply beautiful.

 title=

Thank you to all who came out last night— Eric Haze, Andrew Schoultz, C.R. Stecyk and the rest of our friends. For those unable to attend, be sure to visit Project Space to see Shoe’s “Calligraffit Throw-Ups” on display through November 21.

Calligraffiti Throw-Ups

The Project Space exhibition “Calligraffiti Throw-Ups” is a new series of carbon acrylic on linen canvas works inspired by Shoe’s love for baseball, mayhem and cosmic unconsciousness.

Born, raised and based in Amsterdam, Meulman began tagging “Shoe” in 1979 and became a graffiti legend by the time he was 18. In the eighties, he met New York graffiti artists like Dondi, Rammellzee, Haze, Quik and Keith Haring after which he then formed the Crime Time Kings with Bando from Paris and Mode2 from London. Together, they gave graffiti in Europe its own distinctive style.

Q&A with Aaron Rose

We sat down with Aaron Rose to ask him a few questions about the making of his short film Kreuzberg which was shot entirely on an iPhone 4. Here’s what he had to say.

 title=

When filming Kreuzberg, you told us that you used a tripod. How did you alter the tripod to meet your needs?
I actually didn’t have to alter the tripod at all. The big problem was how to attach an iPhone to an existing tripod.

What materials did you use?
I rigged a contraption using a basic steel “T” bracket from the hardware store and attached it to the tripod using a simple wing nut. It was a pretty DIY setup, but worked well for my needs (lock shots, simple pans, etc.).

How did you attach the iPhone 4 Slider Case to your tripod?
I attached the “T” bracket to the iPhone case by punching holes in it and using nylon plugs to keep it in place.

What was your experience like filming and shooting photos with your iPhone 4?
It was actually quite fun. My biggest problem was holding the camera steady when shooting hand-held. Other than that, it worked great. A zoom mechanism would have been handy, but I quickly got around it.

Do you feel that iPhone 4 will spark an increase in DIY filmmaking? If so, how?
I would hope so. Again, I don’t really think a camera makes a good film. The person looking through it has to have good ideas. That said though, being able to just pull an iPhone camera out of your pocket with a few seconds notice was a really nice plus. A lot of my favorite shots in Kreuzberg were taken that way. I would see something and within seconds be shooting. That’s hard to do with even the simplest SLR or video camera.

What kinds of projects would you like to see other people create using iPhone 4?
The phone/camera hybrid offers an amazing intimacy when shooting. Subjects aren’t intimidated by a camera on a phone. It somehow seems less serious. This is really helpful in getting subjects to relax. I would hope that people would continue to explore this intimacy and make very personal films on the iPhone 4 that couldn’t be obtained any other way.

And now, a few questions for you…

  1. Do you find that you take more photos and videos with your iPhone 4 than with your camera?
  2. How has the iPhone 4 changed the way you make and edit video?
  3. Has there ever been an unexpected situation when your iPhone 4 came in handy?

Leave us a comment with your answers. If you leave one of our favorite comments, we’ll send you an iPhone 4 case.
