Soft on Whitmarsh

On Friday, March 25th, THIS Los Angeles in Highland Park hosted the opening night party for exhibiting artist Megan Whitmarsh. Her work is amazing. Like, for real amazing. Complicated, grand, handmade, heartwarming, time consuming, vibrant, and just really, really enjoyable to gaze upon and ponder. GO SEE THIS SHOW! To commemorate the event we worked with THIS and Whitmarsh to create 100 limited edition canvas totes. Unfortunately all 100 were snatched up during the opening, so we have none for giveaway this time around. Sorrrrrrrrry!

Total Chaos, Austin-style (Incase Goes to SXSW 2011)

This year’s SXSW music conference was long, loud and lurky. We did not sleep much nor did we eat much. We were too busy bee-boppin’ around venues, visiting friends and sponsoring events. Of the many shows and parties we attended our favorite of the week would have to be the ‘Best In Show’ showcase at Trailer Space Records. Located next door to East Side Pies and across the street from Ideal Soul Mart, this beautiful record shop played host to hundreds of all-ages music fans and more than 30 musical guests, (including Thee Oh Sees, La Sera, King Tuff, Strange Boys, Vomettes and White Mystery). Thanks to the efforts of organizers Jonathan Harry Weinberg, Col. Abe, Volar Records and Trailer Space owner Spot, the party struck just the right balance between a raw DIY punk show and a simple neighborly visit with friends.

As for MWTX 5—WOW!!! Transmission Entertainment, FYF Fest Productions and the East Side Drive-In definitely pulled it off again. It was a joy to participate for the fourth year in a row in an event so consistently fun, friendly, and energetic. Over 55,000 people rsvp’d on mwtxparty.com, (of which more than 20,000 attended the all-day party), making it once more the largest unofficial event of the entire music conference. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Rosa, Johnny, Brendan, Graham and Max at Transmission Entertainment, and to Sean, Phil, Mike and Kate at FYF Fest Productions.

Vice Late Night ran 12 midnight to 4AM on the final night of the conference. Harsh tokes for tired folks. After a 12-hour day spent shooting photos in the hot hot sun, doling out a few thousand Incase Slider Cases for iPhone 4, and watching a zillion bands at MWTX and Trailer Space we were reasonably certain we might not make it to the brutal end. But thanks to Thee Oh Sees, OFF!, and Odd Future we certainly did. In true Vice fashion the party was a bewildering mess held in a blown out vacant bank building. Booming sound, rumpled fashions on crumpled hipsters, dim lighting, happy cops and a few hundred friends… Classic. It was a great (albeit exhausting) late night lurk. Thanks again to Shanon Kelley and Stewart Stone, you are like angel babies in our arms. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Megan Whitmarsh opening at THIS Los Angeles

After a long week of excruciatingly loud music showcases at SXSW, (don’t worry, our mega-recap is forthcoming), we’re excited to announce an altogether softer community event— Friday, March 25th, THIS Los Angeles is having the opening reception for RADIANT DECADE, the solo exhibition of painter & soft sculpture artist Megan Whitmarsh. As well the night marks Whitmarsh’s birthday and coincides nicely with the date ten years ago she moved to the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. So folks, as you can imagine, this opening is rather special. For the occasion Incase x THIS x Megan Whitmarsh have joined forces to make 100 limited-edition cotton canvas tote bags commemorating the night. Arrive early to grab a tote, stay late to enjoy the party. The reception is free and features an open bar, 7-10PM. Happy birthday Megan!

Picture Perfect: Stefan Ruiz

VBS goes on assignment to Monterrey, Mexico with favorite portrait photographer Stefan Ruiz to document the “Cholombiano” street culture of sticky sideburns and stoner cumbia jams in the first episode of the new VBS series Picture Perfect.

Introducing the Premiere Episode of Picture Perfect Featuring Stefan Ruiz

Brought to you by VBS.TV, the online television network owned by VICE, and Incase, we are proud to announce the release of the first episode of Picture Perfect, a brand new photography show dedicated to documenting our favorite photojournalists.

In episode one, Picture Perfect visits Stefan Ruiz at his studio in Brooklyn, New York where we talk about hoarding, portraiture, and his career as one of the best photographers around. We then go on assignment with him to Monterrey, Mexico, where an urban subculture of “Cholombianos” are so inspired by the Colombian style and culture that passes through town that they’ll do anything to mimic it.

Stefan Ruiz was born in San Francisco, and studied painting and sculpture at the University of California, Santa Cruz and the Accademia di Belle Arti (Venice, Italy). He took up photography while in West Africa, documenting Islam’s influence on traditional West African art. He taught art at San Quentin State Prison from 1992-1998, and began to work professionally as a photographer in 1994. He has worked editorially for magazines including Colors (for whom he was Creative Director, 2003-04), The NY Times Magazine, L’uomo Vogue, Wallpaper, Rolling Stone and Vice.

Picture Perfect is a video series dedicated to documenting the work and lives of our favorite photojournalists. Each month, we go behind the scenes to explore their artistic process as they go on assignment to all corners of the Earth. We’ll see their successes and challenges as they attempt to capture life in a variety of interesting locales.

Be sure to check out the bonus footage only available here at goincase.com and join Stefan Ruiz as he shares his 1970s photo collection from Cairo, Egypt. These vintage prints reveal a special era with stunning hand-coloring done in the studio.

When It Comes by High Places

“When It Comes” marks the final video of our Room 205 visit with High Places. Forming their artistic partnership in May 2006, Rob Barber and Mary Pearson have produced numerous recordings, including two long players. The most recent of which, High Places vs. Mankind (Thrill Jockey Records), marks the first release since the band’s relocation from New York City to Los Angeles, California. Serendipitously, partnering the dense atmospherics and dark beats of High Places with Room 205’s rainbow arrayed yarn sculpture = perfect fun. Enjoy.
