Get a look at how the Caspian region is re-defining itself through the lens of British documentary photographer Chloe Dewe Mathews.

VICE and Incase are excited to introduce a new episode of Picture Perfect with British photographer Chloe Dewe Mathews. In this episode, we visit Mathews in her studio to talk about her background and journey to working as a documentary photographer. We then travel to Azerbaijan with Mathews to take a closer look at how the Caspian region is re-defining itself in the wake of new oil wealth and get an inside look as she photographs the people who live on and around the ancient sea.

Mathews was born in London in 1982. After earning a degree in Fine Art at Oxford University, she worked in the feature film industry for four years. Though exciting, she questioned its extravagance and wanted to work on something quieter, more economical, where there was room for spontaneity and intimacy with her subject. Since dedicating herself to photography, her subject matter has been diverse, from Uzbek gravediggers on the Caspian coast, to Hasidic Jews on holiday in Wales and Muslim Uighurs in China.

In 2010, Mathews hitchhiked from China back to Britain, which became a recce for a lifetime’s work ahead, informing her way of working both at home and abroad. In our exclusive bonus footage, Mathews shares with us footage she took during another recent journey to the Caspian region, giving us a rare look at what’s locally called “the doors of hell.”

Mathews has recently been awarded the BJP International Photography Award, the Julia Margaret Cameron New Talent Award and the Flash Forward Emerging Photographer’s Award by the Magenta Foundation. Her work on the Caspian region has been nominated for the Prix Pictet and shortlisted for the London Photography Award. In the last six months she’s been named photographer to watch in PDN’s 30, The Observer’s New Talent Issue and the Telegraph’s most promising new artists feature. Her work is published internationally by media outlets including The New York Times, the Saturday Telegraph, The Sunday Times, Dazed and Confused and Harper’s Bazaar.

Photographer James Mollison goes on assignment to the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Kenya to document the lives affected by war, drought and famine.

We are proud to release the fifth and final episode of this season’s Picture Perfect, a brand new photography show dedicated to documenting our favorite photojournalists.

In this episode, Picture Perfect visits James Mollison at his studio in Venice, Italy. Mollison explains the importance of repetition in creating the narratives within his portrait series works, such as his series on the great apes James & Other Apes, which has been widely seen as an exhibition at the Natural History Museum, and Where Children Sleep, his latest book release that originated as a commissioned project for the children’s charity Save the Children.

We then travel with Mollison to the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Kenya, the world’s oldest and largest refugee camp that sits in the desert on the Kenya-Somalia border in the northeast of the country. Built to house 90,000 people, Dadaab now has a population of over 300,000 with 1,300 new refugees arriving every day. Made-up of three camps, Hagadera, Ifo and Dagahaley, the refugees arrive from Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan and all across the horn of Africa fleeing civil war, drought and famine.

Mollison set out to photograph the huge variety of people that live in the camps, from new arrivals to third generation children. He set up simple backdrops that remove the subjects from the chaos that surrounds them to create striking personal portraits that convey the emotion and life that exists within the sprawl.

A special thank you to Doctors Without Borders, which made our visit to Dadaab possible. Their commitment and tireless dedication has saved hundreds of lives. Do your part to help by donating.

Be sure to checkout our exclusive bonus footage where Mollison recounts the story behind his “found photographs” book, The Memory of Pablo Escobar, a personal look into the life of the most notorious drug dealer in history.

Picture Perfect joins Dutch photographer Rob Hornstra during his work on The Sochi Project

In this episode of Picture Perfect, VBS goes on assignment with Dutch photographer Rob Hornstra to Sochi, Russia as he continues to captures the city as it exists before it is thrust into the international spotlight as host of the 2014 Winter Olympics. This time around, Hornstra is photographing lounge singers in restaurants, cabarets and hotel lobbies.

An advocate for “slow journalism”, the Netherlands-based documentary photographer produces work over long periods of time, involving himself in the changes that occur over the breadth of years. His work is characterized by a stylized rawness, with a large dose of intrinsic engagement.

<img src="http://goincase.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/sochi-ladies.jpg" alt=" title="Ladies of Sochi" width="600" height="380" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5574" />

In 2014, the Olympic Games will take place in Sochi, Russia. Never before have the Olympics been held in a region that contrasts more strongly with the glamour of the games. Just 20 kilometers away is the conflict zone Abkhazia. To the east, the Caucasus Mountains stretch into obscure and impoverished breakaway republics such as Cherkessia, North Ossetia and Chechnya. On the coast, old Soviet sanatoriums stand shoulder to shoulder with the most expensive hotels and clubs of the Russian Riviera.

Hornstra and writer/filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen have joined together on The Sochi Project to document the changes in and around Sochi over the course of the next five years. The Sochi Project will be a dynamic mix of documentary photography, film and reportage about a world in flux; a world full of different realities within a small, but extraordinary geographic area.

Brought to you by VBS.TV, the online television network owned by VICE, and Incase, we are proud to announce the release of the first episode of Picture Perfect, a brand new photography show dedicated to documenting our favorite photojournalists.

In episode one, Picture Perfect visits Stefan Ruiz at his studio in Brooklyn, New York where we talk about hoarding, portraiture, and his career as one of the best photographers around. We then go on assignment with him to Monterrey, Mexico, where an urban subculture of “Cholombianos” are so inspired by the Colombian style and culture that passes through town that they’ll do anything to mimic it.

<img src="http://goincase.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/stephanruiz_news.jpg" alt=" title="Cholombiano" width="600" height="380" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5103" />

Stefan Ruiz was born in San Francisco, and studied painting and sculpture at the University of California, Santa Cruz and the Accademia di Belle Arti (Venice, Italy). He took up photography while in West Africa, documenting Islam’s influence on traditional West African art. He taught art at San Quentin State Prison from 1992-1998, and began to work professionally as a photographer in 1994. He has worked editorially for magazines including Colors (for whom he was Creative Director, 2003-04), The NY Times Magazine, L’uomo Vogue, Wallpaper, Rolling Stone and Vice.

Picture Perfect is a video series dedicated to documenting the work and lives of our favorite photojournalists. Each month, we go behind the scenes to explore their artistic process as they go on assignment to all corners of the Earth. We’ll see their successes and challenges as they attempt to capture life in a variety of interesting locales.

Be sure to check out the bonus footage only available here at goincase.com and join Stefan Ruiz as he shares his 1970s photo collection from Cairo, Egypt. These vintage prints reveal a special era with stunning hand-coloring done in the studio.

The seventh installment of Curated by Arkitip pays homage to the early days of modern skate and surf culture with original artistry by C.R. Stecyk III. As a multimedia artist acknowledged as a major influence within the genres of graffiti and street art, Stecyk’s early work on boards he painted for members of the legendary Z-Boys helped to establish the iconic graphic styles of both surfing and skateboarding.

The 15″ C.R. Stecyk III Sleeve and iPhone 3GS Snap Cases for Curated by Arkitip will be available on August 17.
