We are proud to introduce the latest installment of Picture Perfect featuring photographer Zeng Han. In this episode, VICE travels to Guangzhou, China to talk with Zeng about what he sees as the golden age of Chinese photography. We then go on assignment with him as he documents modernization efforts around the city, exploring the confluence of East and West, and the tension between new and old.

Zeng was born in 1974 in Guangdong, China. He studied journalism at Jinan University and worked as a photographer for City Pictorial magazine prior to endeavoring on his own projects. Zeng documents affected landscapes and cityscapes that show how Chinese urbanization reflects what the French philosopher Jean-Baudrillard called “Hyperreality.” He has traveled all over China photographing large-scale projects like the Three Georges Dam and Quinhai-Tibet Railway. While on assignment for Picture Perfect, Zeng continues his “Hyperreality China” project by photographing a community in the process of being demolished and the construction of a building with a circular shape.

Zeng’s work has been exhibited in some of the largest galleries in China, Europe and the U.S. In 2001, Zeng founded a photography publishing house and exhibition space called Authentic Vision with the hope of promoting and inspiring Chinese photography. In our exclusive bonus footage, Zeng’s business partner, Yang Changhong, talks about Authentic Vision during a tour of one of their offices.
