This still image is taken from Warhol's 1964 silent film Empire, an homage to one of the most recognizable skyscrapers in the world. At over 8 hours long, the film serves as a kind of live painting that evolves slowly, almost imperceptibly, as sunset turns to dusk, dusk turns to night, and night turns to dawn. Warhol intentionally slowed down the projection speed to extend the film's length, adding a more serene cast to the stately building's grand persona.
Some critics accused Warhol of purposely making a boring film that nobody wanted to sit through. When asked why he made such a film, Warhol keenly replied, "I wanted to see time go by."
