Andy Warhol’s fascination with pop culture, products and celebrities gave his art a distinct perspective, but it was his detailed recording, documenting and reproduction of these subjects that made him a unique conceptual artist.
His 1964 Brillo Soap Pads box sculptures elevated disposable packaging into a valuable artifact of Americana. One of Warhol’s longtime assistants fittingly described them as “three-dimensional photographs of the actual products.” In addition to a second edition Brillo box in yellow, Warhol did box sculptures of Campbell’s Tomato Juice, Heinz Ketchup, Del Monte Peach Halves, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and Mott’s Apple Juice.
These box sculptures were breakthroughs because they captured the zeitgeist of the era and reconfirmed Warhol’s ability to redefine the boundaries of art. The Brillo sculptures have since become some of Warhol’s most sought after and important works of the late twentieth century.
