Andy Warhol's series of Camouflages are imprinted with everything he most wanted to say about art, about himself and about society. Camouflage allows one to hide in plain sight, a recurring theme throughout Warhol's voyeuristic life. The theme of Camouflage can be seen as a manifestation of Warhol’s own attempts to disguise himself: lying about his past, hiding his scars and blemishes and masking his emotions. This series of paintings and prints, created just before his death in 1986 and 1987, represents the ultimate Warhol philosophy: survival depends on seeing without being seen. Yet, in a classic example of Warhol contradiction, he turns the subject on its head, creating vibrant, colorful prints that stand out in any environment.
