Warhol’s Do It Yourself series lampoons the paint-by-numbers kits that gained popularity with hobby painters in the sixties. The kits let virtually anyone create a piece of “art” by filling in paint colors to corresponding numbered areas on the canvas. To create the series, including his 1962 Do it Yourself Flowers, Warhol used a projector and hand traced the images from an actual paint-by-numbers kit.

Warhol left parts of his Do It Yourself canvases “unfinished,” without any color and the numbers still showing. This freed him to emphasize specific areas of the composition for visual impact, and to liberate ownership of the original source through his unique style. In addition, these empty spaces allowed the viewer to fill in the blanks, provoking a new kind of active art experience.
