Throughout his career, Andy Warhol took everyday things and gave them new life in extraordinary ways with his artistic renderings. Recognizing that the automobile was a truly unique cultural symbol, he created a number of works with cars, including his unique renderings of the VW Beetle and the “king” of cars, the Cadillac. He even painted a BMW M1 “art car” that ran in the 1979 Le Mans race.

Unlike his later works that feature colorful stylized vehicles, Warhol’s 1962 Cars silkscreen showcases an ordinary family sedan repeated in plain black and white. His signature repetition of the image renders the family sedan ubiquitous, crowded into parking lots and congested freeways. However, it also represents a symbol of prosperity, freedom and the open road to the future.
