For Andy Warhol, the telephone was more than just a communications device, it was an instrument for his legacy. Warhol began making daily calls to his secretary for tax record accounting, but the recorded calls soon evolved into a freewheeling account of his daily life. This audio diary was eventually published in book form as The Andy Warhol Diaries.
Warhol’s 1962 Telephone, hand drawn on linen, is one of his earlier works as a fine artist. As he had done throughout his career, Warhol transformed an everyday item into something new. The archaic “candlestick” style upright phone from the early 1900s doesn’t even have a rotary dial to make calls, serving as a reminder of how enduring telephone technology has been, and remains today.
